A Brief History of Light for Living.

Light for Living began as a writing ministry of Pastor Gary Click while pastoring the Calvary Baptist Church in Clinton, IN. His articles were published in the local newspaper, The Daily Clintonian. They were also distributed to email subscribers and several were posted on this website.

Shortly after assuming the pastorate of the Fremont Baptist Temple, Fremont, OH, he was approached by Pastor James Lewis and chief operator, Brian Benedict about providing a two thirty-minute Radio Programs for the weekend. (WHVT 90.5 fm) At this point, Pastor Click's writing ministry transformed into a radio ministry.

Due to time constrains, the weekly devotional gave way to the radio ministry. However, these devotionals are still available online through the Light for Living Archives.

Pastor Click is still active in writing bible studies, dramas and devotional articles for other applications. We hope to make those resources available soon.

Grace and Mercy

If I had two daughters, I believe that I would be tempted to name them Grace and Mercy. I like to refer to these two beautiful truths as sisters. They are sisters because although they are distinctive and individual, you can hardly find one without the other. Just as sisters may be different in their own ways, you can most always find common characteristics, ways of thinking and even similarities in appearance. So too, there is a wonderful harmony found in mercy and grace.

Grace can be easily understood as God giving me good things that I do not deserve. It has been described as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace simply means that something was given to you out of God’s love rather than your merit. Heaven is promised to the believer not because of his works but because of God’s Grace. We could not earn heaven. Nothing that we do could merit the everlasting life that is offered to us. The great salvation that every Christian enjoys is an example of God’s grace. Ephesians 2:8,9 make this clear. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Mercy, on the other hand, is when God withholds from us the bad which we deserve. While grace gives, mercy withholds. If you were to drive past our church at 45 mph in view of a local law enforcement officer, you would likely be pulled over. He would explain to you that you were driving 45 mph in a 29 mph zone. You most likely would not be hoping for justice. Your heart would not desire the speeding ticket you deserve. Instead you would hope for mercy. You would hope that he did not give you what you deserve.

The bible teaches us that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:10) and that the punishment for sin is hell (Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:14,15). The wise person does not ask God for what he deserves but instead for mercy. While God’s mercy keeps us from hell, it is God’s grace that offers us heaven. God’s grace offers us God’s blessings, while His mercy withholds our judgment.

Paul opens three of his epistles much like John does in 2 John verse three. “Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.” Here we find the byproduct of grace and mercy. It is peace. A complete realization of God’s grace and mercy in your life brings you into that full understanding of the “peace of God, which passeth all understanding.” (Philippians 4:7) May your heart be filled with the peace that comes from experiencing God’s grace and mercy in your life.
