A Brief History of Light for Living.

Light for Living began as a writing ministry of Pastor Gary Click while pastoring the Calvary Baptist Church in Clinton, IN. His articles were published in the local newspaper, The Daily Clintonian. They were also distributed to email subscribers and several were posted on this website.

Shortly after assuming the pastorate of the Fremont Baptist Temple, Fremont, OH, he was approached by Pastor James Lewis and chief operator, Brian Benedict about providing a two thirty-minute Radio Programs for the weekend. (WHVT 90.5 fm) At this point, Pastor Click's writing ministry transformed into a radio ministry.

Due to time constrains, the weekly devotional gave way to the radio ministry. However, these devotionals are still available online through the Light for Living Archives.

Pastor Click is still active in writing bible studies, dramas and devotional articles for other applications. We hope to make those resources available soon.

The Grocery Lady

While serving as a police chaplain in another city, we were called to a grocery store to pick up a shoplifter. There was a lady who decided to go grocery shopping but failed to go through the checkout lane. She thought she could bypass it and leave the store with her groceries. However, the management didn’t appreciate that. They detained her and pressed charges. Now suppose that lady said to the manager, “I’ve earned these groceries by being a good customer. I shop here every week. If I see a mess on the floor, I clean it up. I’m very polite to all of the other customers and employees. If I see something out of place, I put it on the right shelf. I never hurt any of the other customers. I’m really a nice person and I don’t deserve to be arrested.”

The manager would have responded, “Groceries cost money. I don’t care what else you do, you have to pay for the groceries.”

There is a tremendous spiritual application here. The bible teaches us that there is a cost associated with sin and that we are all sinners. “The wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23a) Sin must be paid for. We cannot simply claim that we have done good deeds and decide that we deserve to bypass God’s checkout lane. It doesn’t matter how good you are, the groceries, or the sin, must be paid for.

We took this lady to the department, fingerprinted her and took her mug shot. When she saw the mug shot, she said in an astonished voice,  “I look like a criminal.” Then it seemed to dawn on her and she continued,  “Oh, I guess I am one.”

One day it will dawn on many that they are sinners. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” When they stand before the Righteous Judge and their life is reviewed they will say, “I look like a sinner. I guess I am one.” “As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” (Romans 14:11)

Then it will be too late. Today is the day to confess and accept Jesus as your Savior!

Lets back up for a minute. Suppose that the son of the store-owner approached this lady at the store. He extended his hand and offered her a receipt with the words “Paid in Full.” He may have said something like, “Ma’am, I noticed that you didn’t look like you had enough money to pay for those groceries. My father, the owner of this store, sent me to pay for your groceries. I did and here is the receipt. All you have to do is take it and show it to the clerk at the service desk.”

If the woman had any sense at all she would reach out and take the receipt with a smile and a “thank you.” But she could foolishly say, “No. I have my own way.”

That’s just what God did. He sent His Son to pay for our sins. If we have any sense at all, we will accept. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
